Challenge

Building an avant-garde, immersive experience in a 5m x 5m x 5m room for the National Taiwan University (NTU) had many challenges. The main ones are the space constraint and new media content creation.

To achieve the best projection quality in the small space, Optoma determined it needs to install seven units of projectors and elevate them using the high ceiling to ensure the projected content won’t be affected by the visitors.

In addition to site installation, the Optoma team also assisted NTU’s College of Bioresources and Agriculture to create an agricultural tourism promotional project, “Wandering in Kavalan: A journey to Taipingshan for a taste of Kumquat.” Through new media, Optoma transformed agricultural knowledge into exciting learning materials for the immersive educational exhibition.

Solution

In this multi-sensual immersive theatre, the Optoma team simultaneously layered multiple projections to achieve the sensual learning experience, including immersive projections, holographic screen projections, and projection mapping on the dining table.

Using the built-in edge blending feature on the ZU720TST projectors, Optoma created a seamless immersive projection on the four walls and the floor. Paying special attention to the projection presentation, the team successfully projected 360-degree video with realistic perspective angles.

The holographic projection used Optoma's Mixed Reality (MR) Education Platform to display pre-recorded videos of industry leaders sharing agricultural knowledge and information about kumquat.

In the "Future Exhibition Hall," we can see the speakers and educational information holographically displayed over the projections and fixtures.

Achievement

Optoma’s ZU720TST and ZU606T projectors are equipped with high lumens, advanced laser diode cooling techniques, and an innovative dust-resistant design with an IP5X rating. All these high-performance features provided continuous use in the Future Exhibition Hall. The space draws on MR technologies, 360-degree videos, projection mapping, fragrances, and sounds to create a fully interactive and immersive world where visitors embark on a sensory journey.

The Future Exhibition Hall is Taiwan’s first new media white cube on a school campus. It supports the arts and creativity, experimental research, and innovative teaching.

Combining innovative education with industry collaboration through virtual reality technology, NTU’s College of Bioresources and Agriculture successfully promoted Taiwan's agricultural tourism. The visitors can travel through Kavalan with a futuristic immersive video tour and enjoy a multi-sensory educational experience.
